Concept Note

Many family-focused efforts highlight the effects of financial and social conditions on family well-being. Times of uncertainty affect decisions about family formation, timing, and size. Conditions which help families to flourish are now the focus of numerous governments, and gaining attention in international fora. Families, as the fundamental group unit of society, affect more than just their members, but society as a whole.
Steven E. Smoot will be sharing research gathered in the production of four demographic documentaries. This includes research and interviews of many demographers, economists and sociologists worldwide concerned that the world is heading quietly towards a demographic tipping point which threatens serious social and economic consequences.
Families are at the heart of this dilemma, and research in developed countries shows that many stop short of their desired family size. What conditions are creating this gap? How can society foster conditions which enable couples to attain the family size they want? Please join us for a presentation and Q&A on this interesting topic.
