HERstory: A celebration of leading women in the United Nations
A celebration of women’s achievements has been taking place at United Nations Headquarters in New York this month, through photography. On 13 December 2016,  UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Secretary-General-designate António Guterres attended the launch by the Group of Friends for Gender Parity of an historic exhibit to illuminate some of the crucial contributions that women have made throughout the world body’s history – or, as they refer to it, ‘herstory.’

Millions of children throughout the Middle East are in danger as bitter cold temperatures and winter weather bear down on the region, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said today, as it warned the agency faces a $38 million funding gap as it races to provide assistance.

Gender equality is ‘critical ingredient’ in fight against poverty and hunger – UN agriculture chief
The fight against extreme poverty, hunger and malnutrition is not possible without gender equality and women empowerment, José Graziano da Silva, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said today in Rome, where he called for more efforts to ensure that rural women, “the backbone of our work in agriculture,” enjoy a level playing field.

Number of children recruited into South Sudanese conflict passes 17,000 – UNICEF
According to new figures released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), some 1,300 children were recruited by armed forces and armed groups in 2016, bringing the total number of children used in conflict since 2013 to more than 17,000.

Northeast Nigeria: ‘Severely malnourished’ children; more than a third of health facilities ‘completely destroyed,’ say UN agencies
With about two-thirds of health facilities in parts of Nigeria’s restive north-east region either completely destroyed or partially damaged, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has estimated that 400,000 children there could suffer from severe acute malnutrition over the next year.

Open Meeting: Dec. 15, 2016

The NGO Committee on the Family will provide an opportunity for cultural exchange and community experience discussing family and culture in a holiday context. Committee members will be bringing holiday refreshments from their family and cultural traditions, and invitees who would like to do the same are invited to bring a treat to share as well.

With Yemen’s health system near collapse, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned today that nearly 2.2 million children are acutely malnourished and require urgent care, while at least 462,000 are suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) – a near 200 per cent increase since 2014.

A global effort to end violence against women is now underway: 16 days of activism began on 25 November with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against and will continue through 10 December, Human Rights Day galvanizing the work of UN Women’s ‘Orange the World’ campaign and the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence Against Women initiative.
