The practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) must come to a quick end and the global media can play a critical role in making that happen, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon affirmed today during his visit to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

Topic: Flourishing Families—How the Law Undermines Family Relations and What We Can Do About It

Speaker: Clare Huntington J.D., Professor, Fordham Law School, expert in family law and poverty law. Professor Huntington’s article on this topic recently appeared on the Op-Ed page of the NY Times. She recently authored book with the same title as her talk.

Clare Huntington, an expert in the fields of family law and poverty law, is a professor at Fordham Law School. In addition to numerous scholarly articles, Oxford University Press published her first book, Failure to Flourish: How Law Undermines Family Relationships, in June 2014. Her legal experience includes serving as an Attorney Advisor in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel as well as clerking on the Supreme Court of the United States. In addition to international development work in India and Senegal, Professor Huntington was a social worker in the foster care system in New York City. She is a member of the Council on Contemporary Families and serves on the board of the Women’s Prison Association in New York City. Professor Huntington earned her J.D. from Columbia Law School and her B.A. from Oberlin College.
