To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995), the NGO Committee on the Family hosted a March 20, 2025 virtual meeting parallel to the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women 69. We examined the process, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and its impact upon women and the world.

Speakers:
Susan Roylance (Founder of United Families International and humanitarian)
Teresa Collett (Professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law)
The process of negotiations and the parts of the outcome document for the Fourth World Conference on Women were hotly contested, right up to the last minute. This event brought together two civil society leaders who were in attendance in Beijing to share their experiences, including how the draft evolved, the draft language related to family issues, from the prep-coms through the final negotiations, and the people who played a major role. Each speaker also addressed what they feel is the legacy of Beijing.
