Concept Note

Work-life balance is a common topic, and family is key to the life side of the equation. Yet many still struggle to achieve this elusive goal. Due to financial, cultural, and employment aspects, are often placed in opposition to each other. Work offers not only financial benefits but also a sense of purpose and contribution. Yet many still wish that they had more time to spend with family.

How can we respect the desire and need to work while also recognizing that the family is central to a sense of meaning, purpose, and joy? How can we foster a culture that respects both aspects of life? Is it possible to tip the balance towards a rich and fulfilling family life, especially as more families choose, due to both personal and financial reasons, to have both parents work?

This event will examine ways to help achieve family-work balance. Although often treated as a matter of special concern for women, both men and women value their family life and need help prioritizing it while continuing to work. Expert speakers will discuss practical, employer, and policy solutions for helping to achieve this balance, respecting the benefits of work both to individuals and the family while keeping the family at the center.
